Tooth Brushing Tips!

Advice for your toy and small breed puppy

Have you noticed more shredding damage than usual lately? That’s because your pup is still a bouncy, playful (and explorative!) pup but their teeth are almost adult size!

Caring for adult teeth

The most effective way to clean your puppy’s teeth and prevent plaque build-up is tooth brushing.

If your puppy hasn’t been introduced to regular tooth brushing yet, then introduce the process gradually.

Take care to make tooth brushing a positive experience as it’s something your pup will need regularly to maintain a clean and healthy mouth throughout its life.

Tooth brushing tips

Puppy toothbrushes are available with double ended angled heads. If you sense some resistance from your puppy, try a small finger brush or a medium texture human toothbrush to begin with.

The high fluoride content and presence of detergents in human toothpaste can be toxic to pets when consumed. Always go for toothpaste specially formulated for puppies and dogs. Unlike human toothpaste, dog toothpaste doesn’t need to be rinsed from their mouth so they can safely swallow it.

An enzymatic toothpaste is recommended for optimum oral health, with its combination of cleansing, polishing and antibacterial qualities. Enzymatic toothpastes come in a variety of flavours to make the teeth cleaning a more tasty, enjoyable activity.
