We focus on using a handful of simple, wholesome ingredients so that your pet can get all the nutrients they need with no hidden extras.

Brown Rice

Our products are intended for all-round holistic pet health and have been developed by Founder and Veterinary Surgeon John Burns for happy and healthy pets. It’s what’s inside that counts.

As well as being a hearty wholegrain, Brown Rice is a complex carbohydrate (meaning it gives a slow release of energy) and is naturally low in fat. It is also high in fibre which helps maintain a healthy digestive system. It is a good source of manganese, selenium, magnesium and vitamin B3, which are all essential vitamins and minerals for your pet, and it contains antioxidants.

Buckwheat

Buckwheat, despite its misleading name, is actually a seed but offers the same great nutritional benefits as wholegrains, while being wheat, gluten and grain free. It is a complex carbohydrate, giving a slow release of energy, and also high in fibre and is a great source of vitamins and minerals.

Blueberry Extract

Blueberry extract is high in antioxidants meaning it can help to reduce inflammation, and protect against heart disease and cancer as well as urinary infections. In humans, blueberry can improve cognitive function and mood!

Chicken Meal

Chicken is a lean protein source and contains high levels of essential amino acids. Additionally, it contains vitamin B6 which contributes to a healthy brain, nervous system and immune system. To keep the nutrients in our food more consistent we use chicken meal which is 100% chicken, dried and made into a powder.

Chicken Oil/ Fat

Chicken oil is high in essential fatty acids and is used as a healthy fat source in our chicken varieties of food. Chicken oil also contains linoleic acid which is essential in your pet’s diet and important for the skin, kidneys and bones. Dogs and cats also find chicken oil very tasty so it’s a good option for fussy pets.

Chondroitin Sulphate

Chondroitin sulphate is a supplement often used alongside glucosamine to support joints, as it contributes to healthy cartilage. We use this in our ‘Large & Giant Breed’ variety and ‘Senior+’ range.

Hydrolysed Chicken

Our Cat Duck & Potato food contains hydrolysed chicken to naturally add extra flavour as cats are notoriously fussy. ‘Hydrolysed’ means the chicken protein is broken up so small the body cannot detect it, so if a cat has a chicken allergy or intolerance they will be very unlikely to react to hydrolysed chicken.

Duck Meal

Duck is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants as well as being a good, novel source of protein, meaning if a dog has never eaten duck before, they won’t have had chance to build up a reaction to it. Therefore, we often use our duck-based sensitive and grain free diets for dogs prone to allergies and intolerances. Using duck meal helps to keep the nutrients in our food more consistent, it is a high-quality ingredient and is 100% dried duck.

Duck Fat

Duck fat is a healthy fat and contains linoleic acid which is essential in your pet’s diet and important for the skin, kidneys and bones. Duck fat contains antioxidants and essential minerals such as zinc and selenium. It also goes down great with fussy pets as it smells and tastes great!

Fish Meal

Fish is lean and a great source of protein; it is high in amino acids as well as a variety of other nutrients as omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamin D.  Certified by the Global Standard for Responsible Supply (IFFO) meaning that it is responsibly sourced. The fish we use in our dry food is a mixture of white and oily fish and is ocean caught.

Glucosamine

Glucosamine is a dietary supplement used to support and promote healthy joints. We use this in our ‘Large & Giant Breed’ variety and our ‘Senior+’ range.

Green Tea Extract

Green tea extract provides many antioxidants especially polyphenols. It contains L-theanine which crosses the blood brain barrier and can support brain function. It also helps to maintain a healthy immune system.

Lamb Meal

Lamb is high in protein and rich in essential amino acids as well as many vitamins and minerals such as iron. The lamb used in our food is pasture raised and as with all our meats it will comply will EU legislation for animal welfare standards as well as being from assured farms.

Lamb Fat

Lamb fat contains high levels of omega fatty acids such as linoleic acid which is essential to your pet’s diet and important for the skin, kidneys and bones. It’s a good source of B Vitamins which have various roles in blood and immune health as well as maintaining good energy levels.

Minerals

We add minerals to our diets to make sure your pet is getting all the essential nutrients they need. The minerals we add will vary depending on the variety of food as each recipe is carefully balanced, but it often includes iodine, manganese, zinc and selenium. These are all important nutrients to help the body to stay healthy.

MSM -Methylsulfonylmethane

A natural joint supplement often used alongside glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate. We use this in our ‘Large & Giant Breed’ variety and our ‘Senior+’ range.

Mixed Herbs

The mixed herbs we use are a combination of parsley, oregano, thyme, basil, fennel and rosemary. These herbs have a variety of benefits and help to holistically support overall health.

Oats

Oats are high in fibre; this makes them a great ingredient for hungry dogs as it may make them feel fuller for longer. High fibre levels are also important in maintaining a healthy digestive system. A variety of different vitamins and minerals are also in oats, including manganese, phosphorus and iron.

Peas

Peas are high in fibre and low in fat, also containing vitamins A, K, and B. They’re packed with essential and important minerals like iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium. We also use pea protein and pea starch in some of our diets to give them an added boost of nutrients where needed.

Potato

Potatoes score very highly in terms of digestibility, especially for dogs. They are a great novel source of carbohydrate for sensitive dogs and are relatively low in calories, as well as being high in antioxidants, B and C vitamins and potassium.

Pork

Pork is a highly digestible novel protein source so is particularly suitable for sensitive dogs with allergies. It is a bit of a myth that dogs cannot eat pork and due to this, it works particularly well as many won’t have eaten it before in other foods. Our pork comes from assured farms and complies with EU legislation for animal welfare standards.

Pork Fat

Pork fat is novel and high in essential fatty acids such as omega 6 which helps to maintain a healthy coat. It’s also a good source of B vitamins and minerals and helps to make the food more naturally tasty.

Rosemary Extract

Rosemary extract is a natural preservative due to its antioxidant properties. Over 20 years ago, Burns Pet Nutrition was the first company in the UK to ensure that neither the raw ingredients nor the finished product contained chemical preservatives.

Sunflower Oil

Sunflower oil is high in fatty acids which are essential for your dog and are beneficial for the maintenance of healthy skin. It’s great for the upkeep of a shiny, healthy coat and contains omega-3’s as well as omega-6.

Seaweed

Seaweed is a natural source of essential organic minerals, especially calcium, potassium, zinc, iodine, magnesium, iron and copper. It also contains some vitamins, including A, B1, C, D and E. The seaweed we use is Ascophyllum nodosum.

Salmon Oil

Salmon oil is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that help to support a healthy heart, skin and coat. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which help to support the immune system, and studies have suggested it can improve cognitive function!

Turkey Meal

Turkey is a great source of the essential amino acids that your dog needs as well as being high in L-tryptophan which has been shown in some cases to have a calming effect. We use turkey meal to keep the consistency of nutrients in our food, and it just means the meat has had the moisture removed and been made into powder form so it’s easier to cook with. As with all our meats, the turkey used in our foods complies with EU legislation for animal welfare standards and will be from assured farms.

Turkey Fat

Turkey fat contains omegas which help maintain a shiny, healthy coat and it is a healthy source of fat containing linoleic acid which is essential to your dog’s diet and important for the skin, kidneys and bones. It also helps to make the food extra tasty!

White Rice

White rice helps to supply your dog with essential nutrients such as magnesium, phosphorus, manganese, selenium, iron and folic acid. It is a great source of carbohydrate which is an essential part of a dog’s nutrition and provides them with the energy to go about their day. We also use rice protein in some of our diets to give the nutrients an added boost if needed.

Wholegrain Maize

Also known as corn, maize is a highly digestible ingredient and more novel carbohydrate source. The wholegrain maize that we use contains complex carbohydrates as well as fibre to aid with digestion as well as linoleic acid which is essential to your dog’s diet and important for cells in the body to remain healthy.

Whole Linseed

Linseed provides omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids as well as fibre and protein. Fibre is important to a dog’s digestive health, while protein provides energy and keeps the immune system healthy. The oils help to maintain a good skin and coat as well as supporting cognitive abilities!
