Burns Pet Nutrition have just sponsored the 18th Battersea Dog and Cats Home Annual reunion in Battersea park, London which took place this Sunday. The weather was scorching – about 28 degrees but we brought plenty of factor 30 for the staff and plenty of water for the dogs! Owners however, were sensible and sat in the shade and ensured their dogs had water and were cool. Burns Pet Nutrition were, for the first time the main sponsors of this show which invites everyone that has rehomed a dog from Battersea the chance to return every year to fund raise for the charity and show how well their dog is getting on. Battersea take in 6000 dogs and 3000 cats per year. It costs £15 million to run Battersea’s three centres in south London, at Brands Hatch and Old Windsor. They receive no Government funding to help run Battersea and rely on the generosity of the public.
Burns provided the prizes for the dog show and for the activities that dogs could enter – such as water bobbing! Our head nutritionist Fiona was one of the judges for the Most Handsome dog class along with ‘Phil the vet’ one of the stars of the new ITV Battersea dog programme with Paul O’Grady (it’s called ‘For the Love of Dogs’) and the Pearly king and Queen!
We don’t get the chance to do many shows in the East as we are based in South Wales and are still a family run company – small in comparison to other big pet food companies. So we were really pleased to see so many new faces (and a few Burns customers) come to the stand for nutritional advice, dog weighing and to enter our raffle to win a year’s worth of Burns food (with the proceeds of the raffle going to Battersea). We were so busy even with 6 of us – so we are very grateful to Gemma Moor from Battersea helping us and a volunteer from Pets at Home Beckton branch – Tina Hammond who was excellent and helped non-stop all day.
At the end of the day we presented the proceeds of the raffle in a giant cheque to the CEO of Battersea. We are making a short film of the day that will be available soon for viewing.
A very tiring but exciting and busy day. It’s great to get out and about with the Burns trailer and we will hopefully see more of you in London again this November when we attend Discover Dogs at Earls Court.
