One thing we're really, really passionate about at Burns is treating our staff with generosity. From daily homemade lunch offered for £1 in the staff canteen to company cars and training incentives, looking about our employees is hugely important. Therefore deciding to become an accredited Living Wage Employer back in 2014 was a no-brainer, not least because we were already paying in excess of it.
For those that don't know, the Living Wage is a voluntary salary set out by the Living Wage Organisation. The current rate is £9.75 for London and £8.45 outside of London. The wage is independently-calculated and is based on what the organisation believe that employees and their families need in order to live comfortably.
We were actually the first UK pet food company to offer the Living Wage and in 2015 business founder, John Burns won the Living Wage Leadership Award. Speaking on becoming a Living Wage employer,
John Burns said:
“I wanted Burns Pet Nutrition to join the campaign for a Living Wage to demonstrate that we are an ethical employer. I hope I can inspire many other local businesses to follow suit and pay a better wage.”
Recently, we were lucky enough to be featured in a film Oxfam Cymru made about why Welsh employers are choosing to pay the Living Wage (you can watch the film above.)
