We’ve been shortlisted for Family Business of the Year!

by Burns Team Writer

2020 has got off to a roaring start as we recently found out that we’ve been shortlisted for Family Business of the Year in the Wales category.

The fact that we have been running a business for 27 years without the need for investors or stakeholders is something that we feel particularly proud of.

The business gets its name from Veterinary Surgeon, John Burns who founded the company in 1993 and still comes to work almost every day. Ever since the beginning, Burns has remained an independent business with John’s son and daughter even coming to work at the pooch palace in recent years.

When you look at most other pet food companies of our size and nature, they are usually big corporations based in London. This couldn’t be further from what Burns stands for. Despite fierce competition and our geographic location of rural West Wales, we have managed to grow the business successfully worldwide while holding onto a family vibe.

Why should you vote for us to win?

Burns is a family business with a community feel through and through. In addition to two generations of Burns family members working for the business, there are also non-Burns family members working across several departments. We have fathers and sons, mothers and daughters and cousins to name a few.

We also identify strongly with the local community and to this end have our own charity, The Burns Pet Nutrition Foundation which is staffed by a team of 7. 25% of profits are invested into the charity and used to run grassroots projects, local events, rescue dog training programmes and more. Read more about how we give back here.

We have family values such as awareness for the environment around us, providing personal service (reps and nutritionists rather than robots) and offering natural, healthy, ethical and transparent products intended for the health of pets.

Finally, the company is run in such a way that allows staff members to go far beyond the scope of their own role and contribute to wider activities that influence and shape the business whether that be through events, new initiatives or training.

We believe these factors set us apart from our competitors.

How to vote

Winning the top dog award depends on votes, and it couldn’t be simpler to root for us. Simply visit the Family Business Awards and press your paw over the ‘Vote Now’ button.

We are in very good company with Hallets Cider, Tomms Care, Chuckling Goat and Hafod Hardware also in the running to name a few.

Voting culminates in an award ceremony on June 4th when the winner will be crowned. Paws crossed!
