Burns Grain Free Buckwheat Products

Customer Statement

27 August 2026 (updated)

We continue to monitor the voluntary recall announced by Years relating to reports of dry eye in dogs, which they confirm is focused on potential contamination within part of their buckwheat supply chain, rather than an issue with buckwheat as an ingredient itself. This remains a live and evolving situation that we continue to follow closely.

Over the years, Burns has produced an estimated 1.86 million meals containing buckwheat, supplied by Red Tractor approved UK suppliers, across our Grain Free range. At this stage we have no evidence to suggest that the use of buckwheat seed in our recipes presents a safety concern when fed as intended.

However, we take all matters relating to pet safety seriously, and demand high quality and safety standards across all our products. As part of this, we are reviewing the matter thoroughly with our manufacturing team and ingredient supply partners, and have commissioned independent testing as a further precautionary step.

We are also working closely with UK Pet Food, the trade body for the pet food industry, and their dedicated Vet Nutrition team as part of a coordinated, sector-wide response, and will carefully consider any findings from the Years investigation, and from our own testing, as they become available.

We will continue to monitor developments closely and will take any appropriate action should further information become available. We're grateful to those customers who have taken the time to contact us directly, and our Nutritional Advisers remain on hand to support anyone with questions.
