Bernadette Bay & the OBay Shelties

Published: Thursday, January 29, 2015

Bernadette and her husband Dennis have been breeding Shelties for over 24 years. Bernadette previously showed her shelties in competitive obedience and in the breed ring but currently concentrates on agility. As a breeder she has bred seven Agility Champion shelties.  As a competitor she has bred and personally trained three Agility Champions and has numerous International Agility medal in both team and individual events.

Each “OBay” sheltie is special but the star has to be the amazing little Zen (Agility Champion OBay Truly Balanced) who is from the first litter Bernadette bred in this country.

Small but mighty!

Zen stands just under 15” (38cm) at the shoulder but small packages can contain great power!  In her first year of agility competition, Zen became the first Sheltie to win the Mini Agility Finals at Olympia (2005).  That year she also competed at her first World Agility Championships in Spain where she put in two clears with the fastest overall combined times of all the dogs from all countries.  In 2006 this tri-coloured action girl moved up to the Medium height division, home to some lightning-fast Border Collies. This didn’t faze Bernadette and Zen became the first Medium Agility Champion in the UK, one of the youngest ever dogs to boast the title.  Zen has gone on to represent Team Great Britain and Team England in International Competition over 10 times winning bronze, silver and gold medals. She has won almost every major agility final in the UK and has won 12 championship agility certificates.   In 2010 and 2011 she won the British Open at Crufts and in 2013 she competed in her last Crufts at the age of 10.

Keeping it in the family

In between all her activities Zen has taken the time out to produce four litters of beautiful pups. Three of her pups, Zaz (OBay Its Got Pizazz), Zev (OBay Tiz Wild) and Ezke (OBay Boyz Will Be  Boyz) have finished their Agility and Jumping Championships. Most of her pups have followed in her  paw prints and have excelled in agility: winning finals, competing at Crufts and represented Agility Team GB. After each litter Zen has got back to tip-top with the help of Burns Nutrition. Zen is now retired from agility and at 12 years old is fit, happy and healthy. Bernadette says “Agility was originally designed to be fun for the dogs and it showed when Zen came smiling across the finish line. Good nutrition from Burns kept Zen active and fit both when she was competing and now that she is retired at 12 years old.

...and the success continues

Zen has now passed her agility torch to her daughter Zaz (Agility Champion OBay Itz Got Pizzazz).

Bernadette and Zaz have won an amazing 16 Championship Agility Certificates in Great Britain and is also a Danish Agility and Jumping Champion. Zaz has won the Crufts Agility Championship three times in succession and she has won Crufts Singles, Crufts Small Challenge and Crufts British Open. Zaz is an FCI World Championship Individual Bronze Medal Champion and was part of the Team GB small team winning silver medal in jumping.

At six years old Zaz has just produced a litter of two beautiful girls. Three generations of OBay Shelties are now fed on Burns Nutrition!
