Hounds Dropping Pounds is our canine slimming club and a free Facebook support group for owners with dogs on a weight loss journey. Our team of experienced Nutritional Advisors are on hand to offer advice and the community of owners are also able to offer their own tips and tricks.
Every month we ask for you to share updates on your dog’s progress and our “Slimmer of the month” recognises the dog who has made the most progress with the opportunity to win a prize. We even have certificates to mark your progress and if you’re not seeing the results you want to, we are on hand to offer advice.
And even when you’ve reached your dog’s goal weight, we’re still on hand to help you maintain their new healthy weight.
How to tell if your dog is overweight?
You should be able to easily feel your dog’s ribs and they should have a tucked in waistline. If you cannot feel your dog’s ribs, then they are likely to be overweight. Your vet may also be able to help you to determine this.
How long does it take a dog to lose weight?
Weight loss is a gradual process and like with humans, we don’t want the dog to lose weight too quickly. Often, they will lose more weight initially then the rate of weight loss will start to slow down as they reach their target weight. Ideally, we want to aim for a weight loss of around 2% of their body weight per week.
What is the best diet for an overweight dog?
For most overweight dogs, they will need a diet that is low in fat and has a restricted number of calories. Our Weight Control Chicken & Oats diet is also high in fibre which helps hungry dogs to feel fuller for longer which is helpful as we’re gradually reducing the dog’s daily feeding amounts.
