Trustee Vacancy - Voluntary

by Burns Team Writer

Trustee Vacancy – Voluntary

This position has now been filled.

We are more than a pet food company. We have our very own charity, The Burns Pet Nutrition which is committed to improving the lives of people and companion animals across the UK. Originally created over 15 years ago, now as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, our charity work centres around three areas; countryside therapies, reducing social isolation and supporting animal welfare organisations.

We have a vacancy for a committed Trustee, willing to share their knowledge and skill in monitoring the operations of this exciting and vibrant charity. We are looking for a committed, experienced person with diverse skills. The Board is keen to appoint a person who has experience of charitable governance, both financial and regulatory, ideally with experience of working with third sector agencies and an understanding of countryside and/or rural skills.

Please note- all trustees are unpaid. The Board meets every three months and there may ad hoc tasks which arise where trustees may need to be directly involved.

Further information on the role:

As a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, we have objectives registered with the charity commission, these inform all the work we do.  Our Objectives are:

(a)  For the public benefit to promote the education of people in such ways as the charity trustees think fit, including by training or retraining, particularly amongst unemployed people in farming, horticulture and woodland related countryside skills;

(b)  To promote social inclusion for the public benefit by preventing people from becoming socially excluded relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society. (For the purpose of this clause ‘socially excluded’ means being excluded from society, or parts of society, as a result of one of more of the following factors: unemployment; youth or old age; ill health (physical or mental); disability; poor educational or skills attainment.)

(c)   For the benefit to the public to relieve the suffering of animals in need of care and attention in particular by providing financial or other support for animal welfare organisations to enable them to further charitable purposes; and

(d)  Such general charitable purposes as the trustees may from time to time determine’

These objectives are met by our 4 key projects:

  1. Burns By Your Side – a quickly expanding educational initiative placing fully trained and vetted volunteers with their dogs in schools and colleges across South Wales, to improve confidence and literacy levels.
  2. Burns in the Community – a series of projects providing support to socially excluded individuals along with regular group events and practical activities.
  3. The Better Tomorrow Programme – where individuals and small groups of supported people are offered a mentored experience in the workplace and outdoor skills development.
  4. Pet Charity of the Year – which provides financial or other support to animal welfare organisations each year.

Our work is delivered by a small and dedicated staff team of 10 people from our base in Kidwelly.

Role requirements:

  • Share the vision and ambitions of fellow trustees, led by company founder John Burns.
  • Attend trustee meetings on a quarterly basis often held at the company offices in Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire
  • Show support where possible at public Foundation events
  • Act as an ambassador for the Foundation and its operations
