The Welsh Government has announced that £5 million in grant aid is to be allocated to SMEs (small and medium-sized businesses) to encourage development in Wales. Sounds good but that won't go far.
On the other hand, how much public money has been spent so far on consultancy fees for the proposed new London Garden Bridge, pet project of Joanna Lumley and Boris Johnson? Answer: £38 million.
Some £60 million of "private" funds has been raised from individuals and organisations but much (if not all) of that will be eligible for tax relief as Gift Aid. So, call it £50 million of public money and counting.
