Barrie JamesCardiff based Barrie has been involved in agility for over 18 years as a competitor, trainer and judge. He is an acclaimed trainer and competitor and has been to most major events over the years including Crufts, Earls Court, Olympia, European Open competitions as well as many finals and semi-finals. He was also the first person to win The Welsh National Handler of the Year. Most recently Barrie was appointed Team Manager for Wales at the forthcoming World Agility Open Championships in May 2011. Unfortunately this honour means that he cannot compete with his dogs and manage at the same time. We’ll let Barrie tell you about his four rescue dogs himself; Smug (Seriously Smug of Valgray) is a ten year old Working Sheep Dog who has now retired from competitive agility but still enjoys veteran and any size classes for fun. Before retiring she was still winning classes and at, age seven and eight was awarded Valgrays Intermediate Dog of the Year for two consecutive years. Diva (Ouja Fink) is a five year old Working Sheep Dog from the Dogs Trust in Bridgend. An amazing little dog, she has won numerous agility titles even though she has been hampered with inherited illnesses. She has also appeared at Crufts, representing the Dogs Trust in the rescue dog agility, where she also gained the highest score of the weekend in the Top Dog competition. Other titles she has won include Agilitynet Rescue Dog of the Year, Large grade 3,4 &,5, Rescue Dog of the Year and she has represented Wales at the Kennel Club International Festival and gained some lovely crystal with a 1st and a 3rd place. Nessa (Oh What’s Occuring) is my current agility project! A Working Sheep Dog from Many Tears Rescue, she nearly two years old and I am hoping she will be an agility star! She is showing lots of promise but finds it hard to keep the control and is very easily excited. Watch this space… Gav-Lar (show name to be confirmed) is the latest recruit to our family home. Again a rescue from Many Tears, he is a Pappachon (Papillion x Bichon Frisse). He was supposed to be a lap dog for my wife however he’d rather be playing with the collies than sitting quietly.” |
