The Acorn ProjectBased in Lincolnshire, The Acorn Project was founded in 2004 with the aim of helping animals and nature, bringing awareness and education to the young as well as therapy and pleasure to the elderly, infirm or those with special needs.
This is a private organisation which is self funded through the community and marketing services which they offer as well as by donations and sponsorship. The project also works with individuals, small companies and organisations who are involved in nature, wildlife, pet care, the mind body spirit genre for people and animals, health and outdoor pursuits.
The Acorn Project is based at Merlins Place, founder Steve Shore’s home, where they look after a variety of creatures in need including wildlife casualties as well some domestic animals and birds. As Merlins Place is a private sanctuary where many of the animals are in recovery or therapy it is not open to the public. This allows the wildlife to enjoy a calm relaxed atmosphere while the domestic animals live in the comfort of a home environment rather than in kennels or cages.
The project’s wildlife work involves caring for native species such as hedgehogs, owls, bats and garden birds which are usually brought in from vets and other rescue centres. This often includes the time consuming cases such as rearing orphans and all the wildlife remains in the care of the project until they can be released back into their proper habitat. The domestic animals also include orphans and those with behavioural problems.
The Acorn Project’s community work brings learning and joy to schools, nursing homes, special needs groups and they also attend awareness events, workshops and shows. Some of their cats, dogs, rabbits and ferrets are specially trained to provide therapy and bring joy to the elderly, infirm and disabled. The Acorn Project is particularly keen on education and hopes that by promoting learning and understanding they can save animals’ lives in the future and help keep pets out of rescue centres.
Burns supplies the project with a range wide range of products which are used for the wildlife as well as the domestic animals. The hedgehogs are fed Burns Chicken and Brown Rice for cats and many young birds have been successfully raised on Burns tinned Lamb, Rice and Vegetables.
In the future The Acorn Project hopes to expand its education and learning facilities and would like to establish a learning centre where they can offer workshops for people of all ages. They hope that his would bring about a better understanding of the mind body spirit genre for animals and the importance of natural and holistic care in particular.
