Our Welsh Meadow Hay is produced on our Carmarthenshire farms from flower-rich pasture. This rural grassland is non-intensively managed to benefit local wildlife.

Burns Welsh Meadow Hay is a delicious pesticide free, dust extracted hay – grown by ourselves in Carmarthenshire!

Although hay can be used for bedding it is the most important part of your pet’s diet and its essential that your pet eats large amounts of fresh hay every day. Hay is high in natural fibre which is beneficial for maintaining a healthy digestive system. Chewing hay also helps to keep their teeth worn down.

Our meadow hay is produced from flower-rich agricultural grassland which is non-intensively managed. The hay meadows are extensively grazed by cattle only, which, by their nature are non-selective in their grazing habits. This prevents highly palatable grasses form being grazed out of the sward and maintains diversity of grass and flower species.

All our hay meadows are permanent pastures supporting complex ecosystems which have developed over many years as a result of extensive management. Extensive cutting and grazing encourages a diversity of plant species including wildflowers which attract insects such as Bees, Burnet Moths and Red Admiral and Peacock butterflies. Hay meadows also provide valuable habitat for field mice and voles and as the grass is allowed to grow taller and is cut later in the season than silage this also provides cover for ground nesting birds giving them time to rear their young before harvesting.

Later cutting for hay also allows the grasses to produce flowers (inflorescences) and set seed which means the grasses will complete their lifecycle (from germination to seed). The seed produced also provides a food source for many invertebrates, birds and small mammals.
