I was at Parc y Bocs again on Sunday and met Nell, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. She was on Burns Sensitive+ Pork and Potato when she moved to a new home about a year ago, at which point she was in excellent order. She is now 14 years old, still on Pork and Potato, in good body condition and with the energy of a 3 year old. But she smells and she is a bit on the itchy side. She has a lot of tooth tartar and her anal glands are bulging. It seems clear to me that she is getting too much food.
I emptied her anal glands- what a mess! I think that reduced her weight by several ounces, then I weighed her – she came in at 8.5kg. She should therefore be on about 80 grammes of Burns a day but it transpires she’s getting about double that. The owners felt that she was so active she needed more.
Once again, this illustrates the importance of getting the feeding amount right, otherwise the benefits of the food can be lost.
