24th Nov - Fair Trade; diabetes; three legged greyhound; dirt

<<< Back
On Friday evening we went to a Fair Trade event organised by the local Coop. I think the Coop is doing a great job to promote responsible trade with developing countries although I have seen some gripes by suppliers to the Coop in this country.  We have a policy that we only buy Fair Trade tea, coffee and other refreshments for the business but I have seen Asda products so my message hasn’t been getting through.

They were more than generous with the supply of Free Trade wine so on Saturday night I walked back to the Hall to collect my car.  Passing the Rugby Club I met a three-legged greyhound.  I know Kidwelly is an unusual place but a three legged greyhound?  He was soaking wet and seemed to be lost so I decided I can’t leave him here.  He came along quite happily and even led the way.  Round the next corner a car stopped and he hopped in.  His name was Tiger and his owners had been out hunting for him.

A diabetic friend collapsed in the street in London and had to be taken to hospital.  His blood sugar had gone on a roller coaster ride and he was mystified because he’d only eaten a sandwich and had two cups of coffee.  In my opinion, diabetics should avoid coffee and tea because of the effects of caffeine but no-one seems to bother.

Researchers from the School of Medicine at the University of California have concluded that dirt is good.  They’ve found that normal skin bacteria can help reduce inflammation and allergies.  The use of anti-bacterial hand washes and wipes may help to explain the increasing incidence of allergic ailments such as hay fever and eczema.  I always avoid anti-bacterial hand washes and use only good old fashioned soap.
When our children were small the local college used to send us trainee nannies to get work experience.  They stopped when they found out we wouldn’t sterilise the baby’s cups only wash them.
For further reading on dirty, healthy children see John Steinbeck’s short story “Tortilla Flat”. It’s a gem.
