Burns free range chickens are taking the meaning of the phrase too literally. Some of them are ducking through the fence and going walkabout.
We haven’t got our production unit going yet which means we have a glut of eggs. Faith and Jeff in the kitchen are going a bundle on egg-based menus and the staff are buying them. We still had a backlog but the local councillors who were meeting at our office cleared us out. We’re going to put up an Eggs for Sale sign at the roadside with the proceeds to charity.
According to an item in the Guardian, the British Free Range Producers’ Association is worried about the welfare of chickens which lay large eggs. It is probably rather painful but we can only guess at that. What’s to be done? Well, if consumers buy large size eggs which are more profitable for producers this will encourage selective breeding of chickens to produce large eggs. Therefore we should buy medium size and avoid creating a demand for large eggs.
This month’s Poultry World puts the case for egg producers who want the ban on battery cages moved back from the planned 2012 deadline. Let’s hope they don’t get anywhere with that one.
