I don’t watch reality TV so I missed the triumph of Pudsey and Ashleigh on Britain’s Got Talent. Beverley Cuddy, editor of Dogs Today has followed up with an interesting article in today’s Guardian. Beverley writes that if we were had stayed with the training methods of the late Barbara Woodhouse we would still be trying to get dogs to do what we want by yelling and lugging on great choke chains.
Now, rather than yell-and-beat to bully into submission, we use click-and-treat to encourage dogs to perform much more precise and varied activities from dancing to sniffing cancers. All because they want to please.
You can read the article on-line by going to http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/may/14/britains-got-talent-pudsey?INTCMP=SRCH where you can also see a clip of the duo in action.
